Rafael Coronel (1932-2019), a Mexican painter and son-in-law of Diego Rivera, is known for his representational artworks characterized by a melancholic sobriety. The Rafael Coronel Museum, located in the 16th-century convent of San Francisco De Almoloyan y De Asis in Zacatecas, houses his extensive mask collection. Growing up with artistic inclinations, Coronel studied at Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda," developing a unique artistic style. Despite his paintings focusing on popular themes, they are not spontaneous but carefully crafted.
